University Libraries Support for Global Initiatives and International Students

The Penn State Libraries are committed to advancing the University’s global engagement goals in collaboration with Penn State Global and the wider campus community. As the Head of Global Engagement Initiatives and International Partnerships Librarian, Mark Mattson leads the Libraries’ efforts to support the internationalization of teaching, learning, research, and partnership development, and serves as the Libraries' liaison to Penn State Global.

In this role, Mark empowers faculty, staff, and students engaged in global learning, research, and outreach. He integrates library expertise into global programming, develops specialized services for international students and scholars, and offers consultations to support globally focused teaching and research needs.

Mark also partners with Penn State Global to align library initiatives with the University’s global strategies. He co-sponsors programs that promote intercultural understanding and foster global citizenship. Additionally, Mark manages a portfolio of international library partnerships within Penn State’s institutional collaborations, represents the Libraries in international professional forums, and contributes scholarly research to the academic field of international librarianship.

Through this work, Mark helps position the University Libraries—and the broader Penn State community—as globally connected, collaborative, and engaged.
